Who We Are

Daughters of the Nile is an international fraternal organization for women 18 years or older, who are related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, Master Mason, or Daughter of the Nile, or is a majority member in Good Standing of a Masonic-related organization for girls; or who was a patient, with or without Shrine or Masonic relationship, at a Shriners Hospital for Children®. Founded in Seattle, Washington in 1913, Daughters of the Nile members total 25,000 in 136 cities throughout the United States and Canada. The members are proud of their long association with Shriners International and their continuing support of Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

Daughters of the Nile was founded for character building among women social interaction and service to others. These ideals led to our work for the special children of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Daughters of the Nile adopted Shriners Hospital for Children as its sole philanthropy in 1925 and has given over $54 million thus far trough the Daughters of the Nile Foundation and Canadian Foundation. Annual donations are in excess of $2 million.

Proposals to membership are signed by two members who are personally acquainted with woman being proposed. A letter of invitation is then issued and candidates are conducted through the initiatory work at Ceremonials.

The members of daughters of the Nile share a special bond of fellowship with each other. There is pride in our efforts toward supporting the great philanthropy of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

This organization is founded on a belief in the fatherhood of God and the sisterhood of women; thus, the organization is non-denominational. It is not a secret organization, but is a fraternity with secrets.

Monetary donations to the Daughters of the Nile Foundation Convalescent Endowment Fund and Convalescent Relief Account and The Canadian Foundation Convalescent Endowment and Relief Funds, provide support for patient care. Members also sew garments, donate toys, games, books, and other items to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Some members volunteer at the hospitals and host parties for the children.

The emblem is a scimitar with a suspended golden crescent whose center is a white rose. The colors of the Order are green, gold, and white.

Daughters of the Nile originated in Seattle, Washington in 1913 and celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2013.

There are 137 temples: 126 in the United States and 11 in Canada with membership in excess of 21000.
